Migratory humpback whales spend mid-July to mid-October off the Pacific coast, 2.5 hours from Cali, giving birth and then training their babies for the long swim back to Antarctica.
This trip can be done in one long day (4.30am departure!) from Cali, but we recommend incorporating it into a longer trip to the little-touristed, awesome beach and wilderness playground that is Bahia Malaga - for example, a whale-watching day and a night on the coast slots in perfectly either before or after day 3 of our Family trip to Colombia.

We’ll pick you up from your Cali accommodation at 4.30am and we’ll start the 2.5-hour drive to Buenaventura, stopping along the way for breakfast at a typical Colombian roadside restaurant.
In Buenaventura we’ll head for the floating dock where we’ll board a boat and head out for some whale-spotting!
The typical mother whale weighs 40 tons and is 60 feet (18m) long. Her much smaller offspring is playful and we should have plenty of opportunity to observe these massive creatures flipping, jumping out of the water, and making a splash with their fins.
We’ll have lunch on Juanchaco Beach, plus some downtime for wandering, swimming and exploring the waterfalls and mangroves, before driving back to Cali this afternoon.
Meals: Breakfast and lunch included
